SEMI is a riichi mahjong club based in Ann Arbor and the Greater Detroit Area with meetups happening in Ann Arbor (on the U of M campus),
Livonia, Royal Oak, and Detroit (on the Wayne State University Campus). All meetups are open to the public and being an enrolled student is not required.
We are one of the longest continually operating clubs in the US, starting with some like minded people getting together in Plymouth in 2009.
Since then our focus has largely remained on casual, fun mahjong, but if you desire tournaments and competitve mahjong, many members attend several tournaments
a year and can assist in improving your game. In 2024, we successfully held the first Great Lakes Riichi Open (GLRO) and hope to invite the community back to play yearly!
After much discussion and planning, SEMI will be hosting our first tournament this Fall in Saline, MI on October 19-20!
Officially approved by the American Riichi Association, our tournament will offer a chance to win ARA qualifier points –
but don’t worry if you don’t know what those are, because it’s also a chance to have fun and face off some of the
US’s strongest players in a competitive setting that is still welcome to players with a broad range of skill levels.
Attendance is currently capped at 64 players, with a $50 entry fee to cover overhead. Please check out
the event page for more details.

After trying something different at last year’s event, SEMI Riichi is back in the official tabletop games room for Youma 2023.
We have arranged with staff to set up (up to) six tables & mats as an official “event” for tabletop gaming, starting Friday afternoon.
These tables will be open for free/casual play, with a focus on teaching new folks. We plan on having at least one member of our club
volunteering to help out during all hours we have the tables set up. We expect to have these tables run at least until midnight on Friday and Saturday,
so we’re hoping to introduce a good number of new people to the game if there’s that level of interest.

Hello all! We’re launching a new, simple site for SE-MI because for various reasons it seemed like a good idea for us to have a stable web presence not tied to meetup.com or social media.
